Various Types of Adhesive Tape and Their Functions

When packing goods, you have likely used adhesive tape, sealing tape, or cellophane tape to secure packages and prevent items from spilling out. Adhesive tape is made from various materials, including plastic, paper, fabric, metal, and aluminum. Depending on its type and intended use, adhesive tape is not only used for bonding but is also specifically designed for certain industrial purposes, such as automotive painting, glass cutting, law enforcement, and others.

Below are the different types of adhesive tape and their functions.

·      OPP Packaging Tape

This transparent or brown tape is the most common and widely used type. It is commonly used for sealing packages during packing. Made from polypropylene film with strong water-based acrylic adhesive, this tape adheres firmly to various surfaces, including glass, wood, cardboard, paper, metal, and plastic.

·      OPP Printing Packaging Tape

Printed tape is also known as custom tape. This type is custom-made and is not available off the shelf. Its function is for branding, and it can also serve as an identity marker or information medium. Large companies, especially logistics and shipping companies, widely use this tape.

·      OPP Colour Packaging Tape

Color packaging tape is available in several colors such as black, blue, green, red, pink, purple, white, and yellow. This tape functions as an alternative to printed logo tape. It is used to seal merchandise to ensure goods remain secure and are not tampered with. Color tape is also widely used for binding, carpet joining, maintenance, and other needs.

·      Stationery Tape

With similar functions and materials, stationery tape is often grouped under OPP packing tape. However, stationery tape has a smaller size and is made of polypropylene film coated with water-based acrylic resin adhesive. Therefore, this tape is more commonly used for smaller-scale tasks, such as household, office, crafts, and school activities.

·      Masking tape

Masking tape is made from thin crepe paper with an adhesive that is easy to remove. Because it can be easily torn and removed, this tape does not leave residue on surfaces. Masking tape is commonly used in painting to cover areas that should not be painted. It is also widely used in industries such as automotive and architecture for hardening, sealing, and leveling purposes. It is available in various widths.

·      Cloth Tape

Cloth tape, commonly known as black tape, is easy to find on the market. This tape is an office supply used for binding books, papers, and documents. It is also often used as packaging adhesive. Made from cotton fabric with an outer surface coated with PE and an inner surface coated with natural rubber resin, this tape has good strength, weather resistance, and is not easily torn.

·      Double tape

If you often stick posters on walls, you are likely familiar with double tape. This tape is made from paper material with both sides coated with acrylic-based adhesive, allowing both sides to adhere to various surfaces such as plastic, wood, glass, and metal. Double tape is used in various fields, including electronics, offices, printing industries, and schools.

·      Double foam tape

Double foam tape is made from EVA or PE foam coated on both sides with high-tack acrylic-based adhesive. This foam tape functions similarly to regular double tape. It is suitable for mounting and installing car accessories, attaching posters, and various other needs. This tape adheres well to cement wall surfaces.

·      Kraft tape

Kraft tape is made from kraft paper as the base material. The outer surface is laminated with PE, while the inner surface is coated with water-based acrylic resin. Its function is to seal boxes and join paper, and it can also support various types of work.

·      Aluminium tape

Aluminum tape is ideal for jobs that require protection against temperature. It is usually applied to metal surfaces. Its function is to reduce heat conduction. Often, this tape is also used to strengthen signal reception. That is why many people in mountainous areas use aluminum foil tape on TV antennas.
