Military Origins

Before the invention of black duct tape, ammunition packages sent by the military during wartime were sealed only with wax to protect the contents from water exposure. Cardboard boxes were usually sealed tightly using paper adhesive, with the ends left slightly loose. This allowed soldiers to tear open the boxes easily in urgent situations.

However, this method had a drawback: the adhesive ends often tore easily in soldiers’ hands as they struggled to open ammunition packages on the battlefield.

At that time, the mother of two Navy soldiers, and an employee at the Green River Ordnance Plant in Illinois, wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt suggesting the use of strong cloth tape that was more water-resistant and easier to open. She hoped that soldiers would no longer waste precious time opening ammunition packages in critical situations.

The letter was eventually forwarded to the War Production Board in Washington, D.C., which developed a tape that was easy to remove yet strong and water-resistant.

The Apollo 13 Helper

Did you know that black duct tape helped save the lives of the three Apollo 13 crew members after an explosion occurred in the spacecraft’s service module? After the explosion, the crew was transferred to the lunar module, originally designed to accommodate only two people for 36 hours.

They managed to survive for more than twice that duration, but their biggest threat was a lack of oxygen. They survived by creating a carbon dioxide filter made from cardboard, plastic bags, black duct tape, and spacesuit components. This solution ultimately saved the astronauts’ lives. The success of this mission has been documented in recordings preserved by NASA to this day. Duct tape also helped astronauts keep items secure in a zero-gravity environment.
